Mutiny and the Mainstream

Judy Seigel conceived and edited this anthology of more than 200 artist talks, panel discussions, and interviews — reported by Women Artists News writers covering the New York art world live. Her own substantial opening chapter and individual introductions to each section provide the intellectual framework, wit, and context — praised by Art Journal as “just plain wonderful, with all the endearing cussedness of the mud-slinging love fest that is the New York art community.”

The book captures fifteen years of turmoil in the art world’s own voice amid full-blown “panel fever”: artists, critics, curators, and dealers speaking candidly about the uproar surrounding pluralism, Pattern and Decoration, Neo-Expressionism, multiculturalism, postmodern photography, and the conviction that the personal is political.

Long out of print but still a compelling read, Mutiny remains a lively primary source document of a pivotal era. Used copies are available online.
